Halie Thomas is a teenage, vegan chef. After the unfortunate news that her father was diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes, she became very passionate about healthy cooking. She was merely 7 years old at the time, but even as a second grader she realized that many kids her age were already diagnosed with Diabetes. Halie began exploring ways that she could help in the awareness and prevention of Diabetes.
On her website Thomas stated, “I learned that for the first time in two centuries, children were predicted to live shorter lifespans than the adults in our lives,” Halie currently serves as the executive director and founder of HAPPY (Healthy Active Positive Purposeful Youth) Organization, Inc. What where you doing when you were 14?
The goal of HAPPY is to implement community based programming that teach children how to cook healthy meals with plant based options, as well as the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
Thomas has become a celebrity of sorts. She has her own online show “Plant-Powered Halie,” she also travels the U.S. sharing the gospel of healthy vegetarian food options. Halie has also met Deepak Chopra, Chelsea Clinton, as well as first lady Michelle Obama. Thomas had the rare opportunity to speak with Mrs. Obama at the State of The Union address to promote the nationwide Let’s Move initiative.
Halie’s story is inspirational and we hope that she gains momentum from other teens that are interested in the benefits of a plant based diet. Way to go Ms. Thomas!
