Shasvathi Siva and Karthik Krishnan of Mumbai diligently worked to make their cruelty-free wedding a reality. Their hard work paid off as the happy couple proved that no sacrifice had to be made in their nuptials. This vegan duo truly put the passion in compassionate.
The Indian couple’s incredibly elaborate vegan and eco-friendly wedding, which came complete with dog-friendly seating, was recently featured on the website Mashable. The couple made sure their wedding stayed true to vegan philosophies and they aimed to set an example that a wedding could be lavish yet minimally impactful on the environment. Siva’s makeup was cruelty-free, and organic henna was used for her ceremonial tattooing. The entire menu used was dairy free. They utilized almonds, cashews and soy in place of milk. The menu also featured a specialty vegan ice cream shipped all the way from Delhi. The couple even substituted dried fruits for milk filled treats that are usually served at Indian events.
Flowers were spared. They used colorful cloth arrangements instead. Our favorite element is that the banana trees, which are customarily cut down and placed in front of the wedding hall, were planted in place six months in advance. Now, that is serious vision. The couple even eliminated plastic and waste, using edible spoons and recycled newspaper napkins instead.
Siva states, “where there is a will, there is a way. We need more people to have such weddings. Celebration does not need to involve cruelty, that in itself is an oxymoron. So please do explore such opportunities, and make it count.” We can only hope that more couples tie the knot in this fashion.
