2000 Hippos Lives Were Spared in Zambia

Great news for over 200o Zambian hippopotami. Last week the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) released word that they would cease the controlled slaughter of up to 2,000 hippos in the next five years. DNPW stated that they previously tried to stop the spread of anthrax by killing up to 400 hippos per year.

The outstanding team at the Born Free Foundation quickly came to the hippo’s aid after hearing of this legal senseless slaughter. Born Free Foundation’s president Will Travers launched an intensive campaign to end the cull.

The entire African hippopotami population is only about 80,000, thus killing 2,000 seems absurd. Travers hopes that the “cease fire” become a permanent ban. “Were they to recommence the killing,” Travers said, “without doubt there would be members of the safari-going public who would decide to spend their money elsewhere to view Africa’s magnificent wildlife legacy.”

Thank you Will and Team Born Free. We all appreciate your efforts.
